The Jan Deyl Conservatory and High School is located in the building of the Baroque Palace of the Straka family of Nedabylice.

Dr. Jan Deyl

In 1910, the well-known Czech ophthalmologist and university professor MUDr. Jan Deyl founded The Deyl Education School for the Blind, where students were taught craft skills in order to prepare them for the career of music teacher and piano tuner. This institute was established as a charitable institution for the education of blind youth.

After the Second World War, the Prague institutes caring for the visually impaired were differentiated and eventually transformed into state institutions. In 1948, music education was entrusted to The Deyl Institute, and later to The Music School for the Blind.

 Jan Drtina

In following years, the teaching of music became more and more important. This is mainly due to the work and efforts of a blind pianist Jan Drtina, the first and long-time director of the Conservatory. In his time, the school was called The Music School for the Blind, which also included a unique tuning school. The school's great concert hall now bears the name of the legendary director.

The school has changed its name several times over the years, but the continuity, purpose and scope of its activities have remained the same.

From 1960 to 1976, it was called The Boarding Secondary School of Music and the Vocational Tuning School, and in 1976 it was renamed The Conservatory for Visually Impaired Youth and the Vocational Tuning School for Visually Impaired Youth. In 1992, with a respect to the founder, the name of Jan Deyl was returned to the name and the conservatory has since then borne his name. Since 1992 The Jan Deyl Conservatory and Tuning School, since 2006 The Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary School for the Visually Impaired, and the current name is Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary School, a contributory organization.

In September 2020 the school celebrated its 110th anniversary.
